Blog Post: Why Veteran Consideration?

Selection of veterans, those who have not been elected or selected through the regular process is often controversial. Should your Hall of Fame consider veterans?

Selection of veterans, those who have not been elected or selected through the regular process is often controversial. The question most often attached to veteran consideration is “If the candidate was not chosen in the regular process, is s/he truly worthy?” This is a good question, but the question that you must answer is “Has the individual earned the honor?”

I advocate for the veteran consideration for all Halls of Fame. There is no question in my mind that some worthy eligible people are overlooked during the process, most often because the impact has not yet been fully understood during the initial processing time. Selectors may not fully realize the contributions made, the merits of the accomplishments, or the long-term impact of a career. For these reasons, returning to evaluate candidates considered in the past is an important part of capturing the history any organization wishes to honor.
