The International Sports Heritage Association’s 40th Annual Conference was dominated by social media exploration. Five sessions touched on social media as an important part of the Museum and Hall of Fame promotional mix. It’s a challenging environment for Halls of Fame as the platforms and technology are in a seemingly constant state of flux plus the need to constantly update the hardware and educate the social media staff are key elements in keeping pace with the change. The movement beyond email to Facebook, My Space, Twitter, and more will continue. How these avenues can be used to engage and to excite your marketplace and fans needs to be explored. As the target audience becomes younger, the necessity of social media in the mix becomes paramount. It needs to become a long-term strategy investment and not just a quick hit. Do you have friends or fans on Facebook? How are you asking for feedback? What are you learning through your social media? Keep exploring these issues and look for more out of ISHA and other sources about this evolving environment.
